Bass Guitar and Overplaying

If you ask 5 bassists to play a song, you’ll probably have 5 completely different styles.  Some are simplistic, sticking to the root, others will go flashy on the high end.  For me personally, I prefer a solid groove with highlights.  Of course, this question is incomplete.  What song is it?  What style?  What is the setting?  Was I asked to solo?
